The story of Cannonburgh Moving and Storage of Tennessee officially began 40 years ago this year. It grew out of two companies; Carr Moving Co. and Duke Moving and Storage, and was, strictly speaking, a family affair. Hanson Duke Sr. led the way in 1972 with the help of his wife, Brenda Duke, his father and mother Frank James Duke and Sara Duke, his brothers Fred and Robert Duke, nephew Danny Duke, Brenda’s brother Wayne Raines, daughters Novella and Carmella Duke and many other employees.
Based in Nashville, TN on Cleveland Avenue in those early days, they had 5 trucks to start, and the company grew to 20 straight trucks and 7 tractor trailers within 6 years. In 1984 Hanson Duke Sr. moved the company from its location in Nashville to Murfreesboro, TN and changed the name to Cannonburgh Moving and Storage.
Unofficially, the story goes back much further. When Fred James Duke returned from World War II, his first job on returning to home to Tennessee was delivering dry ice(in those days before most folks had refrigerators). Some of his clients asked from time to time for his help moving them after hours. Soon he began a company called Robert E Lee Moving and Storage which is still in operation to this day. He made those moves, as you might guess, in an ice truck, and started his family on a path of service that they continue to this day.
Pretty cool.
Cannonburgh Moving & Storage wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We are grateful for our customers and the opportunity to serve the people of Tennessee, from Memphis to Knoxville and Chattanooga, and from Nashville and Murfreesboro to Franklin and Columbia, to the surrounding south east region with the professional moving services we have developed over several decades and three generations of our family.
Cannonburgh Moving and Storage is also honored to assist Community Care of Rutherford County in Murfreesbro, TN in their efforts in support of Toys For Tots again this year. Community Care of Rutherford County holds an activity every year where its residents and staff participate in an effort in support of the Toys For Tots toy drive. It is a great opportunity for the residents to be involved in the community and to feel that they are helping others in need. There are few better ways to feel vital. The CCRC crew are wonderful, says Cannonburgh Moving & Storage owner Hanson Duke.

Duke believes that assisting these folks in their efforts to give toys to disadvantaged children at Christmas time is a double stroke of good will during this time of giving. Sparing the truck, the gas, the man power and the time are a worthwhile investment in the local community. It is a small gesture that makes a difference for so many people at once. Receiving a letter of thanks from the CCRC is a definite feel good thing, and we want to share it here.
Cannonburgh Moving & Storage,
Community Care of Rutherford County would like to thank you for your dedication, support, and cooperation with our efforts to support the Toys for Tots program. For the last 4 years Cannonburgh Moving & Storage has supplied a truck and a driver to assist with loading and delivering toys purchased by our residents for Toys for Tots. We greatly appreciate your assistance in this endeavor; without your commitment these efforts would be difficult to achieve.
Sincerely, Residents and Staff of Community Care of Rutherford County
